On Nov. 12, artist Billie Eilish released a new single titled, “Therefore I Am” which was co-written and produced by her older brother Finneas. The single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Upon its release, the song had over 3 million U.S. streams and sold 5,000 downloads in one day. The music video for “Therefore I Am” was trending at #1 on YouTube and sits at 44M views in just one week as of Nov. 20, 2020.

The single released on Darkroom/Interscope Records, as “Therefore I Am” earned Billie Eilish her 20th Hot 100 hit and is third to appear on the chart as of 2020. In the music video, Billie is pictured running around in an empty mall grabbing any snack/food item she pleases and there is nobody around to judge or complain to her about what she puts into her body.

Within the lyrics, Eilish is aiming at the fact that nobody else’s opinions of her matter and that she is the only one who can assert her existence following the much criticism and body shaming towards her over the past couple of weeks. According to CNN, in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about “Therefore I Am”, Eilish wouldn’t explain who- if anyone- the song was written about.

“This song is very, very up for interpretation,” Eilish said of the new track. “I’m very curious to see what people get from it and also what they feel when they hear it. I don’t know. But yeah, it’s a little mean, I love it.” Billie loves for people to try and figure out her music for themselves and interpret it in their ways.
