The Tea Behind Driver’s License

Olivia Rodrigo’s new song “Drivers License” has been the hot topic of conversation on all social media platforms the last couple of weeks. She released her song on January 7th and became an instant hit. It has reached number one on several music platforms, breaking many records, and Taylor Swift even congratulated Rodrigo for her song. Perhaps, however, her success may have stemmed from smart PR. Many people started to piece together the drama behind her song through the lyrics and recent events that had happened last year.

Olivia Rodrigo stars in High School Musical: The Musical, The Series alongside co-star Joshua Basset. Rodrigo plays the character Nini Salazar, and Basset plays Ricky Bowen. On the show, Nini and Ricky are a couple, and many watchers could see the amazing chemistry these two actors share. Speculations arose that the two were actually dating outside the show but nothing was ever confirmed due to their age difference. Olivia Rodrigo is 3 years younger than Basset and she is still a minor, turning 18 on February 20th. Many believe this is the reason why the couple never officially confirmed their off-screen romance.

In August 2020, Olivia shared a video on TikTok that was captioned, “And that’s on failed relationships.” The background song of the video was “All I Want,” which is sung by Rodrigo on the show for Ricky (Joshua Basset).

In her song, Rodrigo talks about how she got her driver’s license the week before, just like they had talked about; listeners quickly speculated that she talked about this with Basset. It was confirmed when a clip from an interview resurfaced where Rodrigo tells her fans that she first drove with Basset in an In-N-Out parking lot after finding out the song they wrote together, “Just For A Moment,” was chosen to be in the series.

Rodrigo sings, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl/Who always made me doubt/She’s so much older than me/She’s everything I’m insecure about.” In this part, she hints about Sabrina Carpenter. It is rumored that she and Joshua Basset started a romantic relationship after photos of them together surfaced all over social media. They sort of confirmed their relationship when dressed up as Sharkboy and Lavagirl for Halloween in 2020. One must also note that Carpenter is 21 years old and closer to Bassett’s age.

The line “Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me” refers to the song that Joshua Basset supposedly wrote about Rodrigo titled “Common Sense” in early 2020. In the summer of 2020, he also released a music video for his song “Anyone Else.” Many believed that the song was about Olivia, but in his music video, a blonde girl appeared and many have said it was Sabrina Carpenter.

Many fans are upset about the fact that Basset broke Rodrigo’s heart after he supposedly told her he would wait for her to be of legal age. Others believe that this is a publicity stunt for the show and some are wondering if it’s a bit of both. Either way, this love triangle has certainly captured the attention of everyone.
