During both lunches on August 15, students had the opportunity to see the sports available and sign up for them at Segerstrom High School.
The athletic rush’s main purpose is to share tryout dates and requirements for those interested in athletics. Freshmen are specifically targeted at the rush because they are new to campus, although people in other grades can sign up for tryouts as well.
“Yeah, I would say I mean it’s probably primarily targeted for 9th graders that are just curious about stuff, but also for other students who maybe are just feeling like they want to try something new and are interested in what options are out there,” said athletic director, Mr. Canzone.
Students are bound to be hesitant to sign up for a sport when they think they might not make the team. However, the athletic rush actually benefits the sport teams as well. This allows the new students to see what sports are all about, including new sports, such as lacrosse, that aren’t very well known. The students that tryout because they sign up also have a better chance of making the team due to the fact that they talk to students that participate and can find out what a coach is looking for and how they can grow as an athlete.
“I’d say that the athletic rush did help people join lacrosse because last year a lot of girls there are actually on our team now. We are able to help them get to know what our sport is all about and they get to ask us questions as well,” stated Mia Monroy (Girls Lacrosse, 12)
Any student who did not have an opportunity to sign up during the summer can still go and try out depending on what season their sport is in. Tryout dates are still available, all students need to do is ask a coach or someone on the team.
“I think that the athletic rush is a good opportunity to those who are curious about a sport, but don’t have the initiative to go down and talk to the coach. The athletic rush allows them to talk to some of the students that are participating in the sport.”
