TAUNTON, MA — One person was killed and seven others were injured after a shooting at a house party in Taunton early Sunday, according to police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.
Taunton police said they began getting reports of several gunshot victims in the Weir Street area around 12:37 a.m. Officers arrived and found multiple injured people and party attendees still on the scene.
The district attorney’s office identified the person who died as 22-year-old Zirovick Depina of Brockton. Officials said the other victims were all in their early 20s.
Police were called to Weir Street just after 12:30 a.m.
Investigators said the first calls came in shortly before 12:40 a.m., when people in the area reported multiple victims with gunshot wounds. Police have not said exactly where inside the Weir Street area the shooting happened or what led up to it.
When officers reached the scene, they found that the party was still underway and that several people had already been hurt. The presence of many attendees suggests the shooting unfolded quickly and left a crowd of young adults trying to get help.
Authorities have not released a motive, and they have not described how many shots were fired. The investigation remains open.
Victim identified as 22-year-old Zirovick Depina of Brockton
The Bristol County District Attorney’s office said Depina died early Sunday morning from his injuries. No other names have been released publicly, but officials said every identified victim was in their early 20s.
That age range points to a group of young adults gathered at a social event that turned violent in the middle of the night. The city and county authorities have not said whether the victims knew one another or whether the party was private or open to invited guests.
Police have also not said whether any of the injured victims were transported together or separately, or how many were treated at local hospitals.
One survivor is in serious but stable condition
Of the seven people who were injured, one was listed in serious but stable condition at a local hospital. The others had injuries that officials described as non-life-threatening.
That breakdown means most of the victims are expected to survive, though police and prosecutors have not said whether anyone may face long-term medical complications. Officials also have not released information about the extent of each person’s injuries.
The shooting left one family mourning a death while several others are dealing with hospital care and recovery. Authorities have not provided a timeline for when additional medical updates may be made public.
No arrests have been announced in the case
As of Sunday, police had not said whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the shooting. Investigators also have not identified a suspect or said whether they believe the gunfire was targeted or random.
Taunton police are asking anyone with information to contact them. That request suggests investigators are still trying to reconstruct what happened before, during, and after the shooting at the party.
Police have not said whether they recovered a weapon or other physical evidence from the scene. They also have not announced any charges.
Community tip line remains open as investigators look for answers
With few details released publicly, investigators appear to be relying on witness accounts and community tips to fill in the gaps. Scenes like this often require detectives to sort through conflicting accounts from people who were present and may have left before officers arrived.
For now, the known facts are limited: a fatal shooting, seven injuries, a young victim from Brockton, and a group of early-20s attendees at a house party on Weir Street. Officials have not outlined what may come next in the investigation.
Taunton police have urged anyone who knows anything about the shooting to come forward, and the case remains active.
